Kappa Alpha Alpha Chapter Raises Over $500 to Benefit MS Research

kappa alpha alpha bannerBREWER, Maine - On Saturday, April 24th, the sisters of Kappa Alpha Alpha Chapter participated in the Walk for Multiple Sclerosis in Brewer, Maine. This is the second year the chapter has been involved with the walk, and they plan to continue the tradition in the future given the many personal connections the chapter has with the cause. A number of the sisters have family members whose lives have been touched by this disease, and therefore the chapter is adamant to do anything they can to help find a cure.

The chapter raised over $500 for this walk – more than double the $250 they had anticipated! It was an extremely rewarding experience, not only due to the ability to contribute to the cause financially, but due to the many people affected by multiple sclerosis present at the walk and the appreciation they showed for the participants.

There are walks at several different locations in Maine each year, as well as across the country; to find a walk near you, check out www.walkms.org

Kappa Omicron Colony Assists in MCLA’s 1st Relay For Life

kappa omicron bannerNORTH ADAMS, Massachusetts –On May 1, 2010 the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts hosted the Relay for Life in which Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority’s Kappa Omicron Colony assisted through the selling luminarias and merchandise to walkers and attendees. The Sisters donated their time and effort, as the college community came together to host the first Berkshire County fight against cancer fundraising event.

Kappa sisters Samantha Kone and Emily Minns were charged with the luminaria sales. One of the most moving parts of the Relay For Life is the Luminaria Ceremony which provides the opportunity for people to come together to remember their loved ones lost to cancer and honor those who have won their battle. As the sun sets over campsites and darkness falls, the night is brightened by the glow the luminaria, each bearing the name of someone who has battled cancer. Some celebrate cancer survivors, while other luminaria honor and remember those gone too soon. Each luminaria represents someone special who has been profoundly affected by cancer and the family and friends who continue to fight back in their honor.

“It’s been so powerful to watch everyone come together like this. I definitely want to form a team next year,” said Kone in an interview with reporter Myles Ellison from the Advocate (North Adams) newspaper.
