New Year, New Goals

By: Allesyn Wesner

Here we are- 2023. It’s a New Year and I’m sure many of you are accustomed to the question “What are your New Year's resolutions?”. Sometimes this may seem intimidating or you question if you even have any resolutions. Recently I haven’t been hearing people mention resolutions but rather goals they have for this year. Resolutions are aspects of your life you want to change. Goals on the other hand, are aspects in your life you wish to achieve. Goals should also be SMART. Let’s break down that acronym:

S- Specific. A clear definition of the goal.

M- Measurable. Precise amounts and dates of accomplishment.

A- Attainable. Goals should be realistic but also challenging.

R- Relevant. How does this goal pertain to your life?

T- Time Bound. Provides a sense of urgency with purpose

Goals can be beneficial if there are certain things you are looking to change over a time period. Everyone is different, and goals should align with your personal interests. You have to start small in order to set yourself up to reach a goal.

Looking for ideas? Here are some examples of goals I’ve heard people mention they would like to do for this year:

  • Read a new book each month

  • Spend less time a day on social media

  • Create a work/school/life balance

  • Try a new recipe to cook at home each week

  • Drink more water in a day to stay hydrated

  • Plan a road trip

  • Start a new savings account

  • Develop your own side business

  • Establish a morning and/or night routine

  • Write daily affirmations

Now onto the next step. You have your goals but how do you accomplish them? There are different ways to hold yourself accountable for your goals. If you enjoy writing things out then your best option might be a planner or journal. If you prefer a digital method, a spreadsheet or calendar could be utilized. There are even apps out there that you can use as well. If you and a friend are working on the same goal, then you can hold each other accountable and manage your progress together. Celebrate any small achievements you make towards your goals as well.

It is never too late to create goals for this year. You never know what you can accomplish until you put your mind to it. Wishing everyone a great 2023!
